6 COVID-19-related deaths, 100 recoveries reported

Reno/Sparks, NV – The Regional Information Center is reporting six COVID-19-related deaths in Washoe County. Four of those deaths occurred in August and were not previously reported to the Washoe County Health District. The Health District did not conduct case contact investigations with the four unreported cases and is working with the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services to address this issue.

The deceased are:

  • Female in her 90s and it’s undetermined if there were underlying health conditions
  • Female in her 90s and it’s undetermined if there were underlying health conditions
  • Male in his 80s and it’s undetermined if there were underlying health conditions
  • Male in his 80s and it’s undetermined if there were underlying health conditions
  • Female in her 80s with an underlying health condition
  • Male in his 60s with underlying health conditions

Additionally, there were 100 recoveries and 60 new COVID-19 cases reported in Washoe County.

  • Total COVID-19 cases in Washoe County: 10,706 (+60 from 10/11)
  • Deaths: 176 (+6)
  • Recovered: 9,256 (+100)
  • Active cases: 1,274 (-46)
  • Currently hospitalized: 79 (+3)
  • Cases who have discharged from hospital: 736 (+0)

COVID-19 tests performed in Washoe County

  • Total number of COVID-19 tests performed in Washoe County as of October 12: 156,454 (+680 since 10/11)

Note: These figures are provided by the State of Nevada and can be found on the State Dashboard. COVID-19 tests may include non-Washoe County residents who were tested in Washoe County.

Hospital bed and ventilator information

According to the Nevada Hospital Association, in Washoe County as of October 12:

  • 64 percent of all staffed short-term, acute-care hospital beds are occupied (-3% since 10/9)
  • 47 percent of the all Intensive Care Unit beds are occupied (+3%)
  • 20 percent of all ventilators are in use (+2%)

NOTE: Numbers are for all hospital patients in Washoe County and not just COVID-19 patients.

Washoe County still flagged for elevated COVID-19 transmission, per Governor’s criteria

Washoe County remains one of two counties in Nevada flagged for elevated COVID-19 transmission, per an update from the Nevada COVID-19 Mitigation and Management Task Force.

Washoe County’s case rate per 100,000 over the last 30 days rose from 412.2 last week to 463 this week. The threshold that exceeds the flagged status is 200, meaning Washoe County has more than double what it takes to be flagged for elevated disease transmission.

The test positivity rate in Washoe County went down from 8.4 percent to 8.2 percent (threshold is 8 percent). See the full COVID-19 County Tracker here.
